I bought this pack for winter day hiking. It is large enough to contain important safety equipment that's advisable in remote areas in the winter, including a 15-degree down sleeping bag; extra fleece jacket, mittens, and hat; food for 2 extra days—everything you hope you never need but that could ensure your survival if you got caught in the woods at night. A sleeping pad could be strapped to the bottom. In the summer you might be able to use this pack for 1 night in the woods if you travel lightly—especially if you sleep in shelters and don't carry a tent. There is definitely room for a down sleeping bag and quite a bit more. Mountainsmith has much better pockets than any other manufacturer, in all of its packs. Other manufacturers say their packs have several pockets, but they're usually flat and have little volume. The Mountainsmith pockets extend well out from the main body and add considerable volume and LOTS of convenience. The Lily is no exception. The pockets are large, well placed, and very functional. The best unique feature is the shovel pocket, which adds a lot of extra space—the elastic mesh on the side of the pocket extends out a good 4" at the top. You can easily stow your mittens, hat, and fleece jacket in there to have easy access to them without opening the main compartment. The padding on the shoulder straps and waistbelt is adequate for the weight you would carry in a pack of this size—most likely 10 to 15 lbs. The suspension is also adequate for that weight. The straps are placed a couple of inches down from the top, to better support the weight (compare to a bookpack, on which the straps are attached directly at the top of the pack, allowing the weight to sag on your back). The material is excellent—rugged, cleanable. This is really a fantastic pack. It has all of the features of a full-sized backpack, reduced in size. I LOVE this pack and highly recommend it.

I bought this one for hiking with my kids. It's good quality. Unfortunately, there's not enough space in the main compartment. I have several other brands backpacks. Even though this one looks bigger, it can only handle half of the stuff from the other backpacks. I don't like this design.

I purchased these for our cars to be used as an emergency bag. We hadn't updated ours since we had kids, so it was time... This pack has lots of pockets and much more space that I expected. It was perfect for our needs...

Very nice quality, color and construction. Just was too big for my small frame. Seems like a man's backpack. I do like the chest straps and hip belt; holds it down as I use it to transport my stuff while running. Not the best pack for that. Will keep it and get use out of it though.

I use this pack primarily for school, but bought it to use also for short backpacking trips. I like the creativity of this design. The zippered side pockets are attached to the pack along the sides only, with the top and bottom left unattached. This creates long sleeves that extend the full length of the pack, and are great for long items that don't really fit inside. The cup holders serve double duty since they serve as the bottom of these long sleeves, and can securely hold a water bottle, cell phone, mp3 player etc. The front is home to another innovative open pocket that is a great size, and can be used to either isolate something that may mark your other stuff (your lunch, for example), or that might be needed for quick access, like a map. I do wish that the front pocket zippers did not extend so low so that the pocket front didn't fall face forward whenever unzipped. Also, the belt is a little skimpy, and isn't the best for backpacking. It serves the purpose alright, but it's not the hefty belt that comes on the more serious packs. I was a little disappointed with that, but I like the fact that it can come off when I use the pack for school. There are many straps to tweak this bag to your exact dimensions. You may want to trim the straps to keep them from hanging down everywhere; in my case they hang to the back of my knee.

I'm always looking for a pack for long day hikes and travel. I have several, but this one seems superior to the others. I don't know if it would be good for backpacking, however, there doesn't seem to be enough room for tent, sleeping bag and "kitchen", but plenty roomy for "wear one wash one" and things necessary for a multi-day walking trip, staying at hostels and the like.

I really love this pack. I am quite small and it fits me really well. It is made for weekend trips, but I recently took it on a 5 day trip and I found I had plenty of room for my gear and group gear.
