The baskets break. I replaced the baskets and they broke again on the first snowshoe hike.

For about the same price of two meal deals at the fast food place, I was able to pick up this nice set of poles. Actually bought 2 more sets for my boys. Obviously this is an "entry level" set and not as light or rigid as some carbon fiber Leki's, but geesh at this price I can't complain. Anti-shock is easy to activate and deactivate. Easily adjustable length. Comfortable grips. There's a little bit of "give" in the shaft when weight is applied but nothing that can't handle the typical trekking duties.

Purchased pair of these and was impressed how good they were for a 16 dollar pair of poles. Bought more and gave each of my kids a pair and a neighbor. My son took his to Everest Base Camp and they worked flawlessly. Had Leki poles in past that I paid 10 times the money for, and these are every bit as good, plus they come with the city rubber tip for city walking.

Work very well. A bit heavier than some. The antishock mechanism is pretty stiff, but maybe that's the way it is designed. My first pair did not have carbide tips and they have worn smooth. The later ones are fine.

well being that these are the first trekking poles I will have bought, instead of just picking up random sticks off the ground, I can't really say anything bad about them other then that if you had to spend all day walking with them your arms might get a bit tired/sore but that is what the 'pre-training' is for

  • Question “How do you get the anti-shock to work?”
Asked on 2/16/2013 12:00:00 AM by Yankee Lady from NJ
    • Answer They work just like the Komperdell poles. You extend and tighten the top and second section. Then just give a twist about 1/4 inch you will feel a click. This is a link to a video I did that on our web site that shows how to do this.|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHh5ni-r7v0&list=PLE5222F79DD057018

We need something that telescopes down to around 20" or less. Does the Mountaiinsmith Pinnacle Trekking Pole fit that description? Rhoda”
Asked on 8/17/2012 12:00:00 AM by family calls me rhorho...no one else from San Franciscom, CA
    • Answer The Mountainsmith Pinnacle Trekking Poles are adjustable from 27" to 53". Thanks for asking, I hope this helps.

  • Question “I`m cocerned about the aluminum structure of the poles bending under undue pressure?-----please advise..”
Asked on 5/9/2012 12:00:00 AM by Larry C from pittsburgh, pa
    • Answer We have had no reports of the Mountainsmith Trekking Poles bending under pressure.
Answered on 5/14/2012 12:00:00 AM by Prod. Spec. Ryan from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer Well, it depends on what you call 'undue' pressure. I hike the Catskills, some of the rockiest, steepest, muddiest trails in the US, and they've worked great. I'm 5' 8", 165 lbs, and have never been concerned about them.||For the price, buy them. If you manage to break them under normal usage, you've set a baseline for what you really need - a pretty inexpensive lesson, I'd say.

  • Question “I know some users have addressed retracting the poles: the bottom section is easy, but how do I retract the middle section after I click it to the "Open" position?”
Asked on 11/4/2011 12:00:00 AM by Anonymous from Unknown
    • Answer With Mountainsmith Trekking Poles the middle section retracts the same way as the bottom section does.
Answered on 11/8/2011 12:00:00 AM by Customer Care from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer Just hold the mid section in one hand and the handle in the other and twist. There will be a small click feeling when the sections unlock. If you have the handle in your right hand, twist with your right hand away from your body to unlock the sections.
Answered on 12/30/2011 12:00:00 AM by Raykid from Dubois, WY
    • Answer Grip both pole sections. Twist the lower section counterclockwise relative to the upper section, like you are unscrewing it. Do not twist the narrow connector between the sections. Likewise, to tighten them, grab both sections and twist the lower section clockwise, like you are tightening a screw. The little "click" you feel at the end turns the anti-shock option on or off. If you are loosening them from the anti-shock position, you will first feel the click. Just keep turning to loosen the sections.

    • Answer keep twisting like you do on the bottom section.

    • Answer Yes, you can use these for both seasons.

    • Answer You'll have to find snow baskets. The baskets that come standard are for hiking.

  • Question “What is the diameter of these poles, say if I was going to purchase snow baskets? I'm sorry if this was answered. I thought I saw the answer to this question, but I can't find it now.”
Asked on 4/27/2011 12:00:00 AM by Anonymous from Unknown
    • Answer The diameter is about 2 cm, but you generally have to get the baskets from that company.
Answered on 5/3/2011 12:00:00 AM by Anonymous from Unknown
    • Answer The poles come with removable baskets, so you don't need to purchase them separately. The diamter is 5/8 inch, but the poles and baskets are threaded to hold the baskets in place.

  • Question “How do you adjust these poles? HELP!”
Asked on 2/1/2011 12:00:00 AM by Snow Woman from PA.
    • Answer You twist the sections one way to open then the other way to lock.
Answered on 2/2/2011 12:00:00 AM by Anonymous from Unknown
    • Answer Extend the poles to the length you desire and "lock in" that length by twisting the pole until secure. When you want to put the poles back to the compact, traveling size- just twist the opposite way, reduce size, and twist again to secure.
Answered on 2/14/2011 12:00:00 AM by Kristina of the North from Marquette, MI
    • Answer They adjust by twisting. There are small arrows on the poles marked open and close. Twist in the open direction to adjust then close to lock. These are best adjusted pre-hike. They can lock in very tight if twisted with a lot of pressure. My husband helped adjust mine and they were locked down pretty tight. I found it hard to readjust them when it was time to come down the mountain. This seems to be their major flaw.
Answered on 2/15/2011 12:00:00 AM by chinamomx2 from Clemmons, NC
    • Answer These poles are made in sections-pull the sections down, lowest first then the middle ones one at a time and twist, holding the top part as you twist the bottom untill they're stable-there are gradation marks on the sections so you can set them both at the same point. When you twist turn away from yourself.
Answered on 3/29/2011 12:00:00 AM by Lou from Northport Maine
    • Answer not for sure what your specific issue is; Will they not lock or once twisted to lock position, will not unlock? I had trouble with one, but other was easy; see my comments on adjustment. Once I got them where I was happy and locked them, seems that is a "lock" as I could not collaspe them. Good luck!
