I needed a new camera case as the small one I had barely fit my camera and one additional lens. I bought this hoping for a case that would fit more stuff but would also offer convenient and ready access to the camera. The pack is sturdy and great that it is made out of PET bottles but it isnt built to access the camera quickly. It is kind of clumsy. I decided to keep it because it does work to carry computer plus camera when traveling. I am on my way to India for 9 months and I guess that as long as I dont mind missing the shots that I would wish for when moving from place to place it will work. I think that for when I want my camera ready to shoot I will still use my older and very small case for now.

I own a ton of Mountain Smith gear, and when this pack went on sale, I bought it with the idea that it would replace my high-mileage Explore backpack, which is beginning to come apart after years of hard use.

The main compartment can be configured one of two ways:

    1. Foam / velcro divider basically separates the main compartment into two separate compartments, one up top, and a padded, rhomboid shaped compartment in the bottom, accessible from the bottom zippers. The bottom padded components can be configured (more, smaller velcro dividers) or the padded protection can be removed altogether.

    2. removing all the internal dividers, one large compartment that can be accessed either through the to or the bottom.

The pack s well made, up to Mountain Smith's usual quality, I'm just not sure how I will use it. It doesn't have all of the nice organizational features of the Explore (important since I'm a road warrior - my pack is my office), but carries more. I'll probably use it for extended trips to carry and extra change of clothes, rain shell, etc. and still not have to check my carry on roller bag.

After reading many reviews from different sites, I settled on the Mountainsmith Spectrum over their Borealis. There seemed to be more issues with the Borealis zipper, & I didin't need the larger size anyway. Upon receiving the Spectrum I passed a graphite pencil over all the zippers , they ran smoothly. This lower 'camera' section has ample storage for a large dslr and a couple of lenses, but if together, you would have to put them in the upper section. I have my Nikon D7100 body below in the well padded partitioned camera section , and beside it separately, the 55-300 lens with a rubber retractable hood, fits perfectly. Above in the large section I have the holster as well as binoculars, in another zippered sleeve I keep the extra camera straps, filters and other paraphernalia. The padded shoulder straps do not dig and the bag has 3 cross support straps with snaps. Overall,a well constructed bag for moderate use, there are heavier bags out there for 'extreme' climbing, and traversing , but for my 'birding' use, it's perfect.
    I utilized ST's VIP'Extra%" savings as well as a $20.00 eVoucher & paid $38.47....WOW.
