A friend had this pack and I tried it on. Very comfortable and well made. It opens from the top, a feature I like. It's easy on your back and is very adjustable. I plan to use it for heavy photographic equipment, so I wanted one that had some structure and strength. So far it has served its purpose.

i had a northface recon bag for a decade... well before packs made laptop pouches ubiquitous. i wanted a simple bag for day hikes, travel, gym use, and without the need for being a briefcase / commuting bag wanna-be. mountainsmith won by a wide margin. aside from price-point, the top-loading and single main compartment rock. bigger single space than the recon and the small front pocket meets my usage needs.

my praise speaks to fulfilling my usage and needs - after lots of research and trips to stores. mountainsmith quality and the design of bag were fantastic and the price was icing on the cake.

For the sale price on Sierra Trading Post, this backpack is most certainly worth it. It comfortably fits my laptop (including peripherals) and my gym clothes, so I use it as a primary commuting bag every day. I was extremely disappointed to see the lack of extra pockets and the lack of a key hook, but I've managed to do without.

If you are someone that needs a backpack with tons of compartments, this isn't the bag for you. However, if you need a good, sturdy backpack with tons of space yet doesn't look huge at first appearance, then this is about as good as it gets.

I initially bought this pack for myself, but when it arrived I found that it was not at all comfortable for me to wear. I'm 5'3" with moderately wide shoulders, but I wasn't broad enough to keep the straps from rubbing on my neck. The main compartment also looked too large for my body. My boyfriend tried on the pack and decided he would use it instead, although he was also a bit concerned about rubbing. I really liked the design; the main compartment is large enough to hold a binders and books, and the smaller one could easily accomodate a few other essentials.
    • Best Uses: Books, Office, Travel
    • Cons: Narrow strap attachment
