The mummy shape is the reason to keep them in place. But it is thin on the ground so I would get sleeping pad for them. But this is good for car or cabin if there is no heat.

The zipper has a canvas guard thing to keep it from getting wrapped up in itself which is awesome! The stuff sack is the perfect size and we throw her clothes in it for a pillow. This will last for many years

It's pretty basic and doesn't compress much like some of the bags that are geared more towards backpacking. But I liked it enough that I bought a second one for one of my other kids. We put several nights on the other one last summer and it worked well in temps down into the upper 30's though I wouldn't use it in much cooler conditions than that. We're using these for kids who weigh less than 50# but I think you could cram an average sized 8 year old into it without having them feel like it was much too tight.
