Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. sharp-looking, high-performing VERSATILITY

I am really, really pleased with this jacket, just what I was looking for. (Esp at closeout prices - thanks STP!). It's very lightly insulated, just a thin layer of microfleece laminated to a highly weather resistant shell. So think lower output activity in cool, breezy and/or drizzly weather; higher output activity by itself as it gets colder; and add layers underneath to take you well into the frigid.
The styling is really handsome and understated, it easily goes from office to sports to pub.
This is the kind of jacket Goodwill loves, because paired with a couple of weights of fleeces it can take the place of everything from a windshell to a grab jacket to a heavy ski jacket, a real "closet emptier".
Really thoughtful design, typical OR.
If I HAD to come up with cons:
1. I wouldn't hate pit zips (although it is very lightly insulated, and the way the pockets are designed with a mesh back they pretty much serve the same purpose, so I am not sure pit zips would be worth the bang for the buck)
2. I have 2 OR jackets, and neither have loops to hang your jacket on a hook.

Love this jacket! Wide in the shoulders and narrow in the waist is perfect. Sleeves are plenty long for my 6'4 gorilla arms. Super soft thin fleece lining makes it quieter than most of my other soft shells.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
