Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. Well made, solid jacket.
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Jeb Mac from Kenai Peninsula, Alaska on Tuesday, July 29, 2014
The Vanguard is OR's top of the line jacket with a lifetime guarantee; and it shows in the quality and details including Gore Tex 3-layer fabric bonded to a light interior fleece. Waterproof zippers are well placed and easy to operate, stitching is tight and uniform and the arms are articulated for easy movement. The breath-ability and ventilation allow this jacket to be useful nearly year round in interior Alaska or at elevation. I researched high end shells for a few weeks and compared to the Arcteryx Sabre (same price range) and found the OR to suit me better in fit and function. Apparently the pewter/solar color combination is not particularly popular, but I like it. This is my first big purchase of an Outdoor Research product and I am impressed.

To date I have worn this jacket in pouring rain and wind on the Harriman glacier (605628N-1483104W) and it performed flawlessly; haven't tested in arctic cold yet but I'm optimistic that a down sweater under this jacket will be sufficient for extended time in temperatures well below 0.

*Five star rating does not include durability because I haven't wintered with this jacket yet.

This was a gift for my husband. He does not ski, but this will be great for walking the dogs and snow blowing!
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Reccomend

Fit is slim but comfortable, length is good. I thought it would be thicker, with the fleece lining, but its pretty thin...not necessarily a bad thing, just unexpected. Color is awesome.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Bomb proof jacket, but wasn't what I needed
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Brian from North Carolina on Friday, December 11, 2015
This jacket is bomb proof. Although I did not field test it, it appears very durable and weatherproof. However, that also means heavy (2.4 lbs per the specs). I'm not sure about its breathability, but it does have nice side vents. The vents are not armpit vents ,but start at the side of the chest and go down to above the area where the powder skirt is. As far as sizing goes I felt that the arms were big (a tad long and also wide around the wrists). I am 5'9", 160lbs and got the medium. As it turns out I needed a lighter weight, more packable jacket for an expedition, but thought I would try this one because of the sale. This would probably be great for daily use at the resort or even backcountry if weight and packability are not considerations and if the weather conditions are bad (cold, windy, snowy)--probably too much for bluebird days.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great jacket!!!

Haven't been out on the mountain yet but jacket is very well constructed and pockets are numerous and well placed. I like that hood can be removed for blue bird days as well.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Nice and Tight
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Montana Michael from Montana on Saturday, September 5, 2015
The fit is slightly large so my title has no reference to that (I had read earlier reviews so I ordered a small when I am normally a medium); It is made tight referring to the structure, which is a huge bonus when in the snow for long periods of time. I haven't had much time with the jacket but from an early test it's a good choice, and at the price from Sierra it was an excellent choice.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
