does exactly what it says By hey it's Greg! from walnut creek, CA on 03/17/2009 Pros: Breathable, Comfortable, Durable, Lightweight, Waterproof Cons: Awkward pocketing, Not Enough Pockets or Features Best Uses: Cold Weather, Hiking and Camping, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels too long Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I've been looking for a great rain coat that could also double as my outer layer for snowy conditions. I was looking at a coat from a large out-door retailer and another one from another well known named catalog. The out-door retailer's coat was stylish and form fitting, but I wasn't totally convinced it was going to fit my needs as fully water proof. The coat from the catalog was Gor-Tex (which is best next to rubber) so I was more confident with that. The only thing that stopped me from purchasing it was the fact that the online picture of the coat looked very frumpy and as if it was going to sag on my body (no one likes the wind sail effect in the wind). So I stumbled on this jacket, saw it was Gor-Tex, it looked good and true to fit, purchased it and I'm a very happy customer.
I've used it in both harsh rains and trips to the snow. It retained all water as far as I noticed and the snow never got through it. I would suggest a polartec base layer though because, besides the lining of the wrists, there is no other protection from the cold. It is pretty true to fit and hugs the body pretty well. The pockets are a little awkward placed though. They are placed near the upper rib cadge area right below your under arm. It made it awkwardly difficult to put things in them. Other than that it is a great coat and does it's job well. I am satisfied.
Super lightweight, seem sturdy so far By Enrique the ridiculous enthusiast from Logan on 01/21/2009 Pros: Breathable, Durable, Lightweight, Waterproof Cons: No Powder Skirt, No waist cinch strap Best Uses: Hiking and Camping, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This is a great coat if you're worried about weight. With the paclite Gore Tex it does compress to a very small bundle and nice to throw on when the snow begins to fall hard, or when the rain surprises you all of a sudden. Not super great for skiing, especially in the backcountry because of the lack in a powder skirt or an adjustment at the waist. It also doesn't have a whole lot of beef to it (because of the light weight) and might rip if you beat up on it. (I personally haven't ripped it yet, though!) Overall, I'm very happy with the coat and truly don't have any complaints. Now, stop reading this review and get outside!!
By volker_sbk from Pittsburgh, PA on 01/18/2009 Pros: Breathable, Comfortable, Durable, Lightweight Best Uses: Hiking and Camping, Skiing/Snowboarding, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Bought this so I would stay dry when rolling around in the snow with my kids, and as waterproof layer when backpacking/traveling. So far, it has excelled in the first. As far as quality goes; this product is great. Marmot's attention to detail is simply outstanding.
