Alico Summits, great all around classic By Northwest hiker from Seattle, Wa on 08/12/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: A great all around traditional mid-weight hiking boot. These are the classic hiking boots you may or may not remember from the 70's-80's. Before the current high-tech gortext/synthetic/plastic boots there where the all leather Raichle's and Alico's. Big stiff, heavy but tough as nails and lasted forever. I destroy the synthetic boots in a season and they offer almost no real support. Also they are hot and don't breath and the high tech water proofing is not all it's cracked up to be. The Summits with a good coating of Sno-seal are completely dry and leather seems to breath better than synthetic frabrics. I have both the Alico Summits and the heavier Guides and love them both. The Summits are so comfortable that I wear them as everyday boots. Good for walking and up to medium backpacking work. They offer decent support and they wear like iron. My first pair are going on 6 years old and have about a million miles on them. I just bought another pair for backups and also a set of the Guides for heavy backpacking/clinbing. I highly recommend Alico boots for anyone wanting an honest pair of hard working trail boots cast in the traditional, all leather European hiking boot mold.
By Woodboogah from Maine mountains on 08/07/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Stitching comes apart Best Uses: Everyday, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Professional/Guide, Woodsman trail builder Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots are great ... I've bought two pairs. However, on both left boots the stitching has come apart in the lower part of the laces. I wear them daily, mid April > snowfall for hiking and work, but the stitching should hold up better.
By Hiker Jeff from Billings, MT on 08/05/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Fits my fat foot, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Well I finally found a pair of boots that doesn't give me blisters or foot pain. Usually, my feet really start to hurt after about six miles, not so with these. I recently took them on a 12 mile day hike in the Beartooth mountains and didn't have a single blister when I was done. Did a little mountain climbing in them in the Boulder mountains last weekend and found them to be a good sturdy boot with good traction. They are a bit bulky so you have to be careful with your footholds. Also scrambling through the talus and shale scuffed them up a bit (as would be the case with any all leather boot) but a treatment afterward with Obenauf's heavy duty LP seemed to take care of most of the scuffs. I Have found them to be completely water proof after treating them with the Obenhauf's. I never hiked in them before treating them so I can't say how they do out of the box. I'm taking them backpacking on the 26 mile East Rosebud trail in a couple of weeks I'll check back after that and let you know how they did.
