Caveat: They fit, but not relaxed fit. By GardenGuru from SF Bay Area, CA on 09/18/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Durable, Quality Material, Versatile Cons: NOT a relaxed fit, Pockets Too Small Best Uses: Casual Wear, Travel, Walking Describe Yourself: Outdoorsy Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: First the sad news, then the good (which outweighs the sad)
The sad news: Inconsistent sizing. This is the one and only reason I can't recommend them to a friend: When I ask for relaxed, I want relaxed.
I bought 3 pr Carhartt jeans--all "relaxed fit" and all the same size. I was sad that the sizing varied so widely. The plain jeans were relaxed, if not loose fit. The denim jeans with hammer loops were relaxed. These trousers fall into the regular to slim fit category.
The Good News:
I plan to keep them, but they're not functional as "work" jeans: Work like erecting retaining walls, installing irrigation systems or turning a flower bed. These'll be fine for sweeping, raking, walking to the farmers market or library.
To Carhartt's Eternal Credit:
1. The fabric is dense & durable cotton [not as thick as denim] and there's **no lycra**--thank you Carhartt!
2. They are conservatively cut jeans for grown-up women who work. They are not flimsy, scratchy, elasticized, trendy fashion statements cut to highlight plumber's butt (a universally unattractive aspect, regardless of age and sex).
3. They're long enough. I repeat: They're long enough. I'm 6ft. Finding clothing that's long enough is almost impossible. Thank you, Carhartt, for noticing women need something more representative than short and regular.
4. I was surprised: They're attractive. They're not dressy, but they're more tailored than my usual jeans. I think this is why I'm keeping them--I can look like I'm working hard, but do it with class.
By Kate from upstate NY on 08/24/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Quality Material Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I haven't worn these yet, other than to try them on, but I think they'll be great. It's hard for me to find jeans that fit -- usually if they fit in the hips, they're huge in the waist. Not a problem with these Carhartts; they're actually made for women with hips. I'm almost 5'6", about 115 pounds or so (with roughly a 28" waist and 38" hips), and the size 4 jeans fit well. The length (30") will be fine as long as these jeans do not shrink. (I always wash my jeans in cold water and never put them in the dryer, so I'm hoping these will stay just the way they are.) They're a little baggier than what I usually wear -- I typically need a slim-fit jean -- but I think these still look fine and should be good for casual use and yard work. (Good sturdy material.) I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because I haven't really tested the jeans yet and because they'd be better with another half-inch of length (for me, anyway).
By ang from Comstock, TX on 08/19/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable, Quality Material, Wrinkle Resistant Best Uses: Caving, Hiking through brush, Making trail Describe Yourself: Bargain Shopper, Scrub Brush Queen Inseam: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use these pants when I need to move through not oft traveled paths to remote rock art sites and I cave. These pants serve me well as long as the weather is not too hot, and even when it is, it is nice to have the protection these pants provide from desert scrub (all the bushes out here have nasty thorns)!
