Pick a different pair of zip legs here By TXMatt from McKinney, TX on 05/26/2008 Cons: Bulky, Chafes, Poor Button, Poor Leg Zipper, Poor Material or Construction Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend I have many pairs of zip off leg pants, and this is the first pair I haven't loved. These pants are a very poor execution of a typically practical pant design. If you count on using the zip leg feature, look to one of the many other pants here at STP with this feature.
The waist button popped off on the first wearing. That was easily corrected with a nail together type button as a replacement.
On the second wearing I noticed the interior seams around the leg zipper area wore at my legs quite frequently. After wearing them for a day my inside thighs just above the knee were chafed.
The final straw for these was trying to zip the legs back on while wearing them. After 4 tries to get them back together I finally went into the restroom, took off the darned shorts, and was able to zip the legs back on again.
I have zip leg pants from Royal Robbins, Columbia, Ex Officio, and Woolrich; not one of them give me any problems when reattaching the legs. They all appear to have a heavier gauge zipper to do the task. I have not noticed chafing or discomfort in other zip leg pants in the past.
Zip leg pants are usually great; avoid these.
By john from mill valley on 05/26/2008 Pros: Breathable, Durable and Comfortable, High-Quality Material and Stitching, Packable Cons: Poor Material or Construction, Zippers too light weight Best Uses: Backpacking, Camping, Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend I have been looking for heavier weight zip off pants for cold mornings and warm afternoons. These are great; better than the lighter material found in the "travel" clothing.
I would have used more substantial zippers, and may replace them myself, because they don't zip smoothly, and seem a bit wimpy.
