Poor sizing: short length, must return By Disappointed from Poughkeepsie, NY on 06/03/2009 Best Uses: Cold Weather, Skiing/Snowboarding Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels too long Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: [...] when the Med arrived, the length was too short for a winter jacket. The ad sizing specs are not typical such as 40 for Med or 42 for Large.
By Javide from Greenville, NY on 03/21/2009 Cons: Length is a little short Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Although rated at 650 the down loft in this jacket is less than older down jackets I have owned with comparable ratings. Overall it is constructed and designed well and keeps you warm in cold weather.
I think the High Sierra trade name results in a premium price range relative to other discounted items.
By RidgeRunner from NC on 03/11/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Lightweight, Warm Best Uses: Cold Weather, Extreme Conditions, Mountaineering Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This jacket is nearly perfect. The fit is for the outdoorsman who must use this jacket with harness for Mountaineering or Alpine Climbing in extreme conditions. It is the perfect length for this and hugs the body in its fit. It is ultra-lightweight. The fat has been trimmed in almost every aspect, but it still appears to be durable and well designed. This is due to the double stitched billow seams and taped zipper tracks (to prevent a hung zipper). It's 650 wt. goose down fill is very efficient in cold dry conditions but does appear to have some sort of DWR finish for those slightly damp conditions as well. It is actively windproof and can be cinched to keep even more wind out and to further slim the fit. The Zip off hood is this jacket's best feature. It easily fits over my helmet and googles in my travels trudging through snowfields while keeping my ears nice and warm away from the cutting winds. Yet, for more mild temps the hood zips off and on easily. The jacket has very nice pocket placement also. Easily accessible pockets for the hands and a chest pocket for those "need to reach quickly" items. If you buy this jacket for active use in the wilderness you will be very pleased. For those of you in the North who will be using it in the city or while on commute it may not be enough. However, I would wager that this jacket could keep you warm just about anywhere as long as you care for it correctly and keep it dry. That said, I could not recommend this jacket for skiing/snow boarding as I believe it would wet out quickly and risk being torn in falls due to its light weight. Sierra Designs constructs the finest down sleeping bags made (for many years). They lend this experience to the making of this jacket ,and it really shows. I would choose this jacket over any of the other premium brands for two reasons; Sierra Designs quality and 650 fill down jacket with hood warmth. It even comes with a tiny stuff sack for packing. Excellent product!
