I used the backpack to bring ice and water into Sea World San Antonio (in the middle of July). It kept ice for most of the day with no leakage. The pack has lots of padding and was comfortable, considering I was lugging around 7 bottles of water and enough ice to bury them in.
The only problem was that I could have used some internal zippered storage. There are 2 external zippered areas, which I packed with the flotsam that surrounds children and parents.
You can remove the inner cooler pack and use just the backpack, a feature that sold me on the pack. I can remove the cooler pack to use the large, well-padded backpack. I wouldn't want to carry around just the cold storage bag on my back though, as the straps have no padding whatsoever.
I think that the pack will work perfectly for a day hike with a picnic lunch. I foresee this pack being a staple on our weekend adventures.

Comments: I used it to carry a[*] and some water bottles one evening. There was still ice in it the next morning. Minimal leakage as well. It's still real new...can't rate how it will hold up over time...seems well built.
