The fabric, holds well to the skin without making it too tight, and allows it to breath. Mostly: the elastics are in the right place. I love socks that go all the way below the knee. Not all smartwool sock are this good though.

They are soft, warm, hold no moisture, and stay up on the calf relatively well. The padding is not at all bothersome or bulky for biking or normal daily usage; in fact it feels extra comfy. I recommend these as well as any Smartwool merino socks.
