Mountaineering boots with snow sole By D. Ranger from South Tahoe on 08/26/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Cheap, Great Traction Cons: Sole is less durable Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Wet Conditions Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend I wear these going off trail hiking in granite, but they seem intended for spring or Sierra mountaineering.
They are full shank, which is a bit much for anything except front pointing and edging. They have very aggressive lugs, softer and less continuous than La Sportiva Makalu or Glacier. About the same weight, but more snow-specific. GoreTex. Decent rocker for trails. Asolo, please do a 3/4-shank heavy hiker version with this durable upper.
Break-in time for me was 30-40 miles with some blistering. To minimize blistering, adjustment of the tongue is essential. They show wear on their sole, especially to the front. Also, the metal button holding on the webbing lace guide is wearing due to my clumsy foot placement in these massive suckers. But I can jump down mountains!

Rainier). I have weak heel skin to begin with so I was prepared wearing duck tape and liner socks. I still blistered. But... Once I got on the snow, these things were great! I would suggest a long, slow break in period for these boots.
