Great, lightweight waterproof jacket. Backpacker magazine just rated this the top waterproof jacket for less than $100. For the price, very breathable. Highly recommend.

The Marmot PreCip Jacket is a great product. Recently tested it out on a rainy windy overnight hike in the Smokies and it kept me nice and dry. Pit zips help ventilate, velcro on the hood help adjust it for visibility, velcro on the wrists and drawstring on the waist help keep the seal. Im 5'11 185 and the Large fits well over a few layers. Packs small and makes a great pillow. Very lightweight and quality, a must have for Lightweight Backpacking.

I got this jacket for backpacking because of its light weight and ease to pack into a small space, but I find myself wearing it whenever its wet out (which is alot here in the PNW) What a wonderful purchase. This thing is so light and keeps me completely dry. Thanks STP for a great product at a great price!

Marmot is usually well made stuff. This is no exception. My 3rd precip jacket. Light, good fit.

Main difference with goretex is that these count on the dwr exterior coating more. After 5 years or say 100 uses you need to restore. Overall not as bomber as goretex in vert heavy precip. But Cheap!

    • Answer Definitely just a water shield in my opinion. It actually has an unpleasant "plastic" feel next to bare skin. It is also quite a noisy fabric, walking/hiking/running will all result in a loud swish-swish crinkling sound. I decided to keep it because of the price (got it for less than $50), and because it does the advertised job of keeping me dry. However, it is definitely not soft shell quality or material. This will be my packable rain shield (very light weight and compressable) and not my go-to rain jacket. Better options out there for more utilitarian jackets, even within the Marmot brand. I own and have owned several other Marmot jackets and have loved them all except this one.

    • Answer No, the jacket does not have a lining. The waterproof coating is applied to the underside of the shell. I thought it might feel a little clammy in damp or cool weather but it's not too bad.

    • Answer No lining... It is a waterproof shell. Great rain jacket.
Answered on 12/10/2014 5:24:32 PM by PA Hiker from Pennsylvania
    • Answer No, there's no lining in the fabric, but that's kind of the point. It would not work as it's supposed to if there was a lining. The fabric is very different on the outside than on the inside. I think a liner would interfere with the breathability of the fabric, and would also make it bulkier. The way it is now the jacket is super light and packs down very small- I mean, you could put it in a large pocket or stuffed into an outside backpack pocket.
The best way to use it is to layer with other things depending on the temperature.
Answered on 12/10/2014 5:52:41 PM by Terry from Virginia
    • Answer Okay- I already answered this, then I went and re-read the jacket specs- it says the fabric is nylon and the "lining" is polyester. So I went and looked carefully at my jacket too. There's definitely not what you would consider a separate "lining" in the traditional sense. The only thing I can figure is that maybe it is bonded to the outer fabric so that they appear to be a single fabric. I'm no expert, as far as high tec fabrics, but that's my best guess from what I can see based on my own jacket. I hope that helps you some.
Answered on 12/10/2014 6:00:40 PM by Terry from Virginia
    • Answer It is just 1 combined layer of fabric (the outside looks like a water shield, the inside looks/feels like a liner. It doesn't really keep you warm with a strong wind or temps below 45 degrees.

    • Answer The short answer is "I don't know". I purchased mine in May and I don't know how quickly these go from retail to closeout on STP. My guess would be no...but that's certainly not definitive. I can tell you this.....I have owned several Precip jackets over the years. The oldest I wore out which Marmot replaced for free. I think the next couple were given away as loaners/gifts. I currently have two on my gear rack....which also includes a selection of Goretex shells as well. I always reach for the Precip as it does the job. The bang for the buck of this jacket simply can't be beat. I don't know if the "Nano Pro" addition is worth it...seeing you're in Miami that's a far more humid environment so perhaps it is. I can tell you though, for me, this jacket occupies my pack nearly 100% of the time and has served me superbly. Sorry I couldn't be more specific about the "NanoPro" aspect.

It is a very nice quality lightweight jacket at a great price. I wore it up in Alaska fishing during a down poor and stayed bone dry underneath. I highly recommend it.

    • Answer Seems to run small against former Marmot sizing...

...With the sizes in my recent experience, between a returned Medium from 2005 --and a recent replacement from Marmot warranty-- shows something is amiss. By the time I'm done with their warranty, shipping and handling, I'm about $30 in the hole. A newer Precip I bought two years ago cost me $48 from STP and it was a Large Mens. I can wear polar fleece 200+ inside -and it is Large- on me. Medium used to fit correctly with insulation liner...

      {This is how mens Glove Sizes have gone. Try and find an XL that fits your formerly known as Size Medium hands, that measure the same; I have new old-stock and know the XL/XXL cost more in retail. But they are medium and large by measure, not by label.}

    • Answer The jacket has a pull chord on each side of the hood at the top of the front zipper that allows you to tighten the front edge of the hood around your face. It also has a velcro adjustment on the rear exterior to reduce the hood height.
Answered on 4/17/2014 3:14:46 PM by Jack from Maryland
    • Answer I always wear a hat to keep the bill out of my eyes since it is not stiff, but that's pretty common with this type of jacket.
Answered on 4/17/2014 3:18:17 PM by Jack from Maryland
    • Answer Yes. it's very adjustable. Velcro tab on top pulls the hood back if needed and standard draw strings pulls the hood over your face as you find on most hoodies. Hope that helps.
Answered on 4/17/2014 5:04:51 PM by David Dawson from Meadville, PA
    • Answer Yes, the hood is adjustable in the forward/back position only by using the Velcro strip on the back of the hood. The hood can not be removed though.
Answered on 4/17/2014 5:09:39 PM by KYJoe from KY
    • Answer You can roll the hood down behind the neck and secure it with a velcro tab if you do not wish to use it.
Answered on 4/17/2014 7:37:09 PM by macmom from Iowa
    • Answer Yes the hood is adjustable.
It has a draw string, hidden inside the hood, along the open edge, to snug up around the face - the draw string is adjustable from both sides - left & right. It also has a velcro tab on the back, outside, to adjust the location of the hood fore and aft on the head.
Answered on 4/17/2014 10:04:54 PM by droF from Novi, Michigan
    • Answer It does. There are elastic drawstrings at either side of the neck that tighten the hood on both sides, up to the visor. The visor part on top does not tighten. There is also a thin velcro strip on the back of the hood that can be used for adjustment. There is no special pocket or strap on the jacket for stowing the hood away.
