Handiest gadget I found for fly fishing. You can find others that cost a lot more and even look better but this is the tool that does what needs to be done while standing in a stream. Coupled with the Dr. Slick Pin-On Retractor it is like having all the fly tools you need at your finger tips. Clips nails too

I have about 4 or 5 different fly fishing packs and vests that I use depending on how and where I am fishing on given day. I have a pair of these hanging on a zinger on every one of them. They are handy for trimming knots, tying nail knots, and cleaning the eyes of flies and painted jig heads. Everyone needs a couple of them.
As I see it, for instance, search engine "Nail Knot". Instead of a nail or a straw, the vee holds the lines loose until one or both lines are drawn back through the middle or groove of the vee and cinched tight as both the lines are being removed from the end of the vee. Not to be flip, but the tier doesn't actually tie the knot; it just serves as a frame or jig or form for keeping the lines loose until the lines are woven together back through themselves and finally cinched tight with the long ends clipped neatly. It merely facilitates.
