I wanted a wsrm hat which was somewhat classier than a ball cap, and this fits the bill. Unfortunately, the L is floppy on my 7 3/8 head (it would look and feel silly on a 7 1/4 head). This is the only time when Sierra's sizing recommendations have not worked for me, so I am still a happy guy. Too b...

A nice hat although I'm not sure how its supposed original retail price can be justified. Even with the STP discount, the price seems a bit high. Don't get me wrong, it's a nicely finished hat and the quality is good, but come on. I ordered the medium and it's a big tight with the ear flaps up and a bit loose with them down. The flaps don't really fit tightly enough to fend off the bitter cold or nasty winds but they do help retain some warmth. As for the style, well, it's a personal choice regarding where it falls on the doofus-cool spectrum. Personally, I couldn't pull it off so back it went.

This is a good looking well made hat , I normally wear a 7 1/4 size fitted hat and the medium in this hat fits very well for me . I did use the ear flaps on a 25 degree day with no wind and they kept my ears warm . Its not going to handle the real cold weather but is a nice hat for everyday winter wear .

This cap is handsome and well made. I did have some trouble with the fit, however.
I have a classic size medium head by all accounts and tests of helmets and hats alike. I finally tried to give this hat another try after giving my first one to my brother. The cap has a lot of "extra" material around the inside of the brim, sides, and back.
I removed this extra material with scissors to no detriment to the construction of the cap.
Fits much better now.
It's also possible to remove the ear flaps if you don't want them with a seam ripper without any ill-effects to the cap shape or construction.

I got this hat for my husband for Christmas. While he thought it might be a little big for him at first, he has found he really likes it and it wears very well in the drizzly, chilly weather of western Oregon. I would say this hat runs a little big, but if the flaps are up it will be snugger than when the flaps are down.
Complete sizing information for this product is available on the product page.
You can tuck the ear flaps into the hat if you wish to have them tucked away.

Gottman hats are all designed so that they can comfortably be worn with the flaps tucked up inside the hat or down over your ears. I will occasionally also fold the flaps up on the outside of the brim as well, and the hats all seem to fit just as well using any of those variations. Even when I tuck the flaps up inside the hat the outside remains smooth, not bulging. Gottman does an outstanding job of making that work seamlessly, so their hats are very versatile. I find the flaps are long enough and fitted to be tight enough to cover your ears so only the fiercest wind can get under them, in which case I use a scarf around my neck to hold the bottoms of the flaps down and that solves that problem.

Up or down, and it looks great both ways.

The flaps will go up, as shown in the product photo. When up the hat fits about 1/4 size smaller, but I felt the hat runs big overall.

Both up and down. The flaps are thin and wool.

Ear flaps up like the photo; or down, when the chill is on... Of course if you are going to wear it with the bill reversed, then flaps up for driving.

This hat can be worn comfortably with the flaps UP or DOWN.

It can be worn either way...the ear flaps fold up INSIDE the hat (unlike most similar hats).
