I have been experimenting lately with an assortment of merino wool socks. These are very good as the spectrum goes. Tighter weave, not as fuzzy as others, seem durable.Good weight for daily as well as day hiking use.

Verryy soft and warm socks. I find these socks even softer than smartwool but a little bit thinner(on both midweight). Shoe size is 81/2 but I find size small is better fit than size medium. One small sizer does not crinkle under even during a long steep hike.

I wasn't sure about these when I first got them. I wore them without washing them and they were very tight at the ankles and a little itchy. All it took was one wash though, and they are honestly the best winter socks I've ever owned. I wear a size 6 and the small fits very well. Would probably be fine up to a 7, for a snug fit. They are warm and cozy, with zero itch factor and the ankles are snug but not tight. The weight is a good thickness for hiking. I just got back from a trip to Canada in late fall and wore these every day.
