Soft shell jacket is comfortable to wear for winter climbing. However, it lost the hard shell in waterproof. This Mountain Hardware's Kepler jacket is perfect even in the comfort and in waterproof. By buying this jacket, my climbing has become very comfortable.

I gave this jacket full stars because almost everything was perfect.

The fit/sizing had the same problems as other recent mountain hardware jackets. That is, it is tight in the shoulders and neck whereas loose around the waist. The result is a boxy non-athletic fit. The Kepler was not as bad with this as some other MH jackets. For example, their Beacon jacket was far more of a box. I am 6 feet and 205-210 lbs. The XL i tried was too big but it was close. I ended up returning it because it was just slightly too big--I wanted something that i could wear with light-medium layers. If you plan to wear heavy layers you may want to try a size up.

The color was off. I bought the blue with white/yellow zippers. In the pictures it is a faded blue but in real life it is very bright. More of a standout piece for the ski hill.

Now the positives! The material was awesome. I almost kept it for the material alone. People debate whether this is a softshell versus a hardshell. Each to their own. I consider it the finest softshell ever made. The material is softer than gore tex. Paired with the fleece lining, it is very comfortable and easily could be worn with a t-shirt. It seemed well made and durable. All of the zippers, cuffs and seams were durable.

MH should keep making versions of the Kepler. I will be buying one once I find a size large.

    Highly recommend. Ask me questions.

i am looking forward to putting this jacket through its paces this winter in NNY as a snowboarding & hiking jacket.. A soft breathable hard shell!

It's August so I will update this review to include performance once the weather changes.

Many reviews on MH jackets concerning the fit of their performance shells. I'm 5-8, 180lbs with an athletic build. I typically wear large outerwear that has "athletic or alpine" fits. Traditional fit items I wear a medium as I don't like a baggy look. I've got larger shoulders, so I went with the large in this jacket based on reviews on MH gear. Couldn't be happier with the fit of the jacket. It fits a polypro top, waffle pattern top, and my TNF Thermoball (also a large) underneath without being too tight or restricting movement. Hiking & snowboarding doesn't require reaching over my head, so even though the jacket rises while doing this, it's not a concern based on my intended uses for the jacket.

    Very happy with the jacket.

This is the most breathable waterproof jacket I've ever worn. I skin up in it and it keeps me dry and warm to ski down in it.

I am quite pleased with the overall feel of this jacket. The lining is buttery smooth and I have never felt too warm, too cold, or too sweaty when wearing it. I wear a 37" sleeve on my dress shirts and would like a little longer sleeve if I were going to be working overhead, but I knew it would be just a tad short. I am counting on this jacket to provide me with many more years of this comfortable performance. I like the hood, but the collar seems to come up at to an awkward position on the chin when fully zipped. Would definitely recommend to a friend.

At 6' 2" and 210 pounds the XL fits perfectly. Roomy enough in the shoulders to layer but not ginormous through the body. Soft to the touch, very wind proof and easily adjusted, this is my perfect jacket.
