On my quest to finding a waterproof shell with fleece backing to wear everyday, I tried this one out. This is a good everyday combo at less than 2 lbs its a lightweight performer, good for short bursts of rain like walking across a parking lot, blocks the wind and provides a comfortable level of warmth until about 20 degrees F.

I am a north face owner mostly. I currently wear a denali fleece hoodie everyday also have summit series and steep tech/scott schmidt, also marmot, mountain hardware and pre sellout helly hansen). Due to the mainstream popularity TNF is seeing these days (being sold at costco) I've been looking at other brands like Spyder, Descente, Phenix, arc'teryx, Norrona

This jacket is well made, but lacks the level of detail at the engineering level that you see in TNF higher end models. For example, the hood is a simplistic design with only two draw cords with exposed ends vs sewn in ends where you draw a loop. There is no draw cord to gather the hood in the back of the head and it's sized for a helmet so without one the hood is huge and falls and will cover your entire face.

I'm tall and slender 6'5" 220lbs. The sleeves and torso are extra long. The fitment is a GO. It gives a very free range of movement.

If this is truly an $800 jacket I would expect a much higher level of technical features like perhaps a powder skirt, pit zips, internal sleeve cuffs, low friction sleeve liners, sewn in lens wipe, insulated cell phone pocket, etc..

So don't think of this as a $800 jacket on sale for $175. Think of it as a $175 jacket for $175.

I have to admit however that the Phenix jacket is very sharp looking and will definately set you apart from the crowd.
