I bought my March Brown Hidden Water 9' 4 weight to use for casting #8 streamers to #20 dries that I can barely see to thread on backcountry lakes and streams. This is a great little travel rod. I have had it for about a year and 4 months now, and have used it a few times on smaller streams when hiking/backpacking. It's super lightweight, and it has a great fast action. The quality of the rod is pretty impressive. I don't feel like any of the feel of the rod is compromised by having so many sections. I will admit the dots are not perfect (they appear to have been painted on - and maybe with less than complete sobriety) - just look down the rod and make sure the guides are in line. I always do that anyways.

I'm not sure why some of the other reviewers had a problem with the removable section - mine definitely works that way.

First, there is a discrepancy between the description of the rod and picture on the web site. The description is correct, the rod does have 7 sections.
This is a well built rod and comes in a cloth bag inside a very secure rod tube which is about 14" long. This rod will easily pack into your luggage or maybe even your briefcase. The rod has a hook keeper and single foot guides. The rod seat is down lock instead of the more common up lock. This has the effect of moving the reel further back on the rod and makes the balance point right in the middle of the cork which is where it is supposed to be. I had no problem with the alignment dots and they are essential on this rod because it has so many pieces. I have cast the rod with 3wt weight forward line and it easily casts 30 feet which is more than enough for small streams. This feels to me to be a mid-flex rod but it is fairly stiff. The 3wt does not heavily load the rod. I look forward to trying this rod on small brookie streams here in the East.

I bought my March Brown Hidden Water 9' 4 weight over a year ago to use for backcountry lakes and streams. On my first test cast I discovered it rockets a WF4F line 60' easily with my mediocre casting skills, and that's well beyond the ability to mend. A 10" fish puts a nice bend in the rod but it has more than enough power to safely land a fish twice that size and protect light tippets so it has become my dry fly rod of choice for big or small water without a thick rainforest jungle up to the water's edge and overhanging trees. With 6 ferrules the rod is slightly heavy for a 4 weight, yet when balanced with my 5.6 oz RLS 1 reel the swing weight is still light enough to be a joy to cast and fish with all day.

The two reviews by CW mention a defect for not being able to shorten the rod by removing the 2nd lower section, but neither review mentions which rod was purchased. The March Brown website states only the 6'6"/5'6" 3 weight and 7'0"/6'0" 4 weight rods have the "Convertible" feature where one section of the rod can be removed. Reviews also mention alignment dots are mispositioned. I see March Brown now has a $35 fee for repairs but I found their ""No Excuse Necessary" LIFETIME GUARANTEED. 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEED" Customer Support to be excellent for two problems; including one admitted totally bonehead user-caused, that were non-rod defect or breakage issues and suggest contacting the MFG at the number on their website to ask if a true mfg defect can be resolved without the payment.

This is my second attempt to review this rod and make customers aware of the flaws. STP blocked my last review, for no reason I can see other than a negative review of the rod, and I imagine they will block this review since it points out flaws in the rod and in STP.

I emailed STP with my questions and concerns and received a very condescending and truly unprofessional response. Such as, "First things first..." and This is not going to fly"....

Bottom line - Clearly some of the rods have defects with the dots lining up. STP's response "it takes time to align the dots". I suppose they feel I am an idiot and there is no possibility there may be a defect.

Also, March Brown list a feature of this rod where one can remove the last rod piece to shorten the rod. When I asked STP if mine was a defect etc. they accused me of making it up and stated this was not a feature. Buyer beware - these rods does not have this feature. Even though March Brown states these rods have this feature, STP refuses to do any research on this matter. Again, I guess STP feels they always accurately list all features of products.

Rod just arrived - have not used. Rod looks great but a two things seem to be off. First, the dots on the rod, which are used to align the rod pieces, are all aligned except for the last, close to the seat.

2nd Issue. March Brown Hidden Waters Series Rods are suppose to have feature that allows you to remove the section above the handle to shorten the rod without having to restring. Whether these rods frp, STP do not have this feature, or if mine is a defect, i am not sure. All I know, while I can remove the section above the handle, the handle will not fit into the next section. Curious if mine is a defect or if all of these rods lack this feature.
