I had used the 8 weight version of this rod and liked it quite well. But, the lighter 7 weight was my preference, so I was pleased to see STP have this model available. These rods are well made, cast like powerfuly and are a pleasure to use. I use them for spey casting; they are a bit much for me to use for very long overhead casting - but I'm scrawny. The reviews for this rod series on the web are strongly positive, and I would certainly agree.

Great little rod. I got the 5wt and use it for trout but also for Great Lakes steelhead. A true challenge to get a steelie on a 5 wt but FUN! Nice rod and great price. Service was also very good on delivery.

  • Question “What is the fly line grain weight recommended for the 8 weight rod? ”
Asked on 1/1/2014 7:47:28 AM by Bill K. from Pennsylvania
    • Answer Hi Bill,

I will defer to recommendations from George Cooke, the Sage/Redington rep for the Pacific Northwest: for the 8 weight Redington CPX Switch Rod: Rio Scandi 435 grains, Rio Skagit 425 grains, Rio AFS 7/8, Rio Switch 7/8. I personally like a little heavier line to feel the rod load more easily, but I am not an expert spey caster. Similar recommendations would apply to the Airflo lines. The Airflo Rage was suggested to me. I like 450 grains on the 8 wt.; pro's seemed to prefer the 420 grain version. The Rage is a somewhat shorter floating line, so works nicely with these shorter rods. I like the Rage because it fishes well on top with skaters and 2-4-6 size hairwing flies that I like to fish. This is a sweet rod series; very enjoyable to cast all day & plenty of muscle when you hook up.
