This is exactly what I was looking for to go exploring through the backcountry of northwest Montana. It's 50% wool, so it's breathable and water resistant, but where this piece really hits the spot is under a shell. It's a combination of a very sturdy jacket and a sweater. The fabric is functional and is not going to be damaged by active use, which is further aided by a bit of synthetic material. This is warm jacket, but not too warm for outdoor activity. I'll put this on under my shell to go out snowshoeing or cross country skiing on cold Montana days. I've been very comfortable wearing this at 10-12 degrees up to 35 or so with a slight wind. It's reasonably wind resistant. It also looks good to wear simply out and about. The collar comes up quite high to protect your neck, as well.

If you're looking for a functional middle layer that can also function as a nice looking and warm outerwear, this is a good pick. I agree with the comments that it's a bit boxy on the bottom. I'm 5'11" 175 pounds, and a large fits me well, though leaves a small amount of room. Not bad. I could layer underneath, but don't really see the point. Note: I don't really mind the feel of more coarse wool. Yes, it's the more course wool and not the soft but more flimsy, snaggy, and tearable merino wool.

Great quality and build but I would consider it more of a jacket than a sweater. It does not stop all wind but is still very warm. I am 5'10" 165lb and a medium is a perfect fit as a jacket with 2 shirts underneath. It does not have a pull string at the bottom or adjustments at the cuffs. Both fit very will and are not needed. I would recommend it to anyone and buy it again.

Did not like fabric of construction, felt cheap, looks cheap, light weight, but sent back.

This is a very high quality, durable item that's also stylish and totally functional. It's very warm but also highly breathable and reasonably windproof. I use it as a mid-layer when skiing and it has a high collar which works well in frigid windy conditions on the mountain. I like the fact that the outer layer is wool with a fully lined inner layer of bonded fleece and smooth synthetic material in the sleeves and front. It's also quite stylish and can be worn as a jacket/sweater but it's not just for show, it really performs quite well and it'll keep you warm without sweating. It's also reasonably stretchy and the sleeves are cut long enough so you don't feel exposed or constrained while skiing or moving around.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you can still find this past season item at this great discounted price: I'm 6' 175 lbs and reasonably athletic and I found the medium to be a perfect fit for mid layer use. I usually wear a large but medium was definitely the way to go on this item. The outer layer is wool as is the standup collar (inside and outside) so if you absolutely hate wool then you might take issues, although as I mentioned, the inside is totally lined with synthetic material. Also, the hem doesn't have a draw-string so it can't be cinched. This hasn't really been an issue since I bought a medium which has a somewhat fitted cut for my frame.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a do it all item that'll provide years of use and still look great under virtually any circumstances.

The quality of the sweater seemed OK, and it would probably be pretty warm. However the cut of the jacket is to big and bulky, I've seen this kind of fit in jackets before but not sweaters. It is not tapered at all and there is no way to cinch the base of sweater down. I could have layered another sweater UNDERNEATH this one, thats how much spare room there was. Since I use my sweaters for layering, this sweater would bunch up under my jackets because it's not form fitting at all. I am 5/9 155 lbs in good shape and bought a size medium, if I exchanged for a small it might not fit in the shoulders, I did not want to risk it. I've got some great stuff here from S.T.P, but I've got some duds as well. Once you start going down the return/exchange route it gets costly, one thing I don't like about this site. I cringe every time I have to return something, I live in SC and I lose close to $20.00 roundtrip in shipping fee's for nothing when this happens. I'll give it 2 stars because the quality seemed decent, but I would not recommend it, especially if you are a thin/med build. If you are larger build the sweater "might" work. When I pulled the base of sweater out from my beltline there was about 4-5 inches of spare room, with no adjustment like I said, It fits more like a jacket. You can call S.T.P. and get pit to pit measurements etc. They check with the warehouse and get back to you (I think the medium is 22" on this sweater) , so I thought it would be OK. I had no way of knowing the overall odd cut of the sweater though. Oh well, part of the online shopping experience when buying outerwear here - great prices, but you have problems sometimes. I decided I can't buy outerwear here unless I have owned the brand name before or it has a few reviews. So that's why I'm putting this one up for you guys, that's my overall take on the sweater. I would have kept it if it did not have such an oversized, boxy fit.
