We have purchased many types of luggage and have always been impressed with Eagle Creek. This carry-on has exceeded our expectations with both form and function.

The design of this bag might not be for everyone, but it fits my needs perfectly. The suitcase itself (without backpack attached) has few organizational compartments (just two zipper pockets; one on the front of the suitcase, and large mesh pocket on interior). However, with the backpack attached (which is how I'll use it most), there are pockets galore.

Before purchasing, I was worried that attaching the backpack would make the whole unit top-heavy and prone to tipping. Thankfully this is not the case. The suitcase portion tapers in depth toward the top. That is, the base of the suitcase is the typical 9" deep, but it tapers to ~6.5 inches at the top. This sacrifices space within the suitcase, but means you can easily attach the backpack without making the whole unit top heavy. Also means that, with backpack attached and lightly packed, might still meet the 9" depth limit of carry-on luggage (for some airlines in US, at least). I have yet to test that, but I think it will work to carry on the luggage with back-pack attached and lightly packed.

The one design feature that won't work so well for me is the cover of the suitcase itself. Unlike a lot of roller bags, the top zips off around the sides and top, but stays intact at the bottom of the bag (plus a couple critical inches along each side). This means the lid can't simply be opened and flipped back, and stay flipped back so you can treat your suitcase as an 'open trunk' of sorts, when in a motel. Rather, the lid wants to fall back into place, due to the attachment at those critical inches along the sides, if that makes sense. Not a huge deal, but I will miss the simple pleasure of flipping back the lid of the suitcase, and having it stay open for days of use. oh well.

WARNING: if you're ordering this (or perhaps the same luggage in other sizes) in the colored hues, rather than black... I initially ordered this luggage in green. However, I had to return that piece, due to a fabric color defect. After zipping off the backpack, I saw that the green color on the front of the suitcase portion was quite different from the green color on the sides of the suitcase and the backpack. Close, but different enough to look really weird. I exchanged it for the all-black version.

love this luggage, bought it to replace old heavy piece and this is so easy to handle - fabulous for a quick trip - especially the backpack!
