Bought these for a friend who hikes and does 5-7 miles frequently. Loves them! Astounding what a difference good socks make if you are on your feet for long periods of time on rough/hard surfaces. They launder well (lingerie bag, cold water) and hang them dry or do on low. Really extends how long they last.

These socks live up to their advertising. The thick cushioning is wonderful for a day spent on your feet, sizing is right (men's 9), and merino wool makes them comfortable to wear almost all year (maybe not the hottest days!)

These may be the most comfortable socks I have ever worn. After trying one pair I bought six more. They feel really spongy. They are wool, so they are a little warm for summer wear, but so far I'm willing to put up with sweaty feet for the added comfort. According to the company, this model is one that they currently only sell through Sierra Trading Post.
I cannot comment about the REI socks, never having those particular socks. The composition of these, Goodhew socks allows them to have good warming thickness without feeling like your standing on fuzzy cardboard, the beauty of marino wool. I like the Goodhews, very nice loft; if socks are to thick they don't breath, thus fuzzy cardboard.
