These socks are not expedition, as rated. They are closer to mid-weight. The cushioning is think and comfortable. However, the part of the sock that run along the top part of the foot is extremely thin. I don't know why a "trekker" sock would have see-through weave on the top of the sock! I don't think these socks will hold up well in challenging or weedy terrain. If shipping weren't so costly, I would definitely return.
I cannot comment about the REI socks, never having those particular socks. The composition of these, Goodhew socks allows them to have good warming thickness without feeling like your standing on fuzzy cardboard, the beauty of marino wool. I like the Goodhews, very nice loft; if socks are to thick they don't breath, thus fuzzy cardboard.
