I purchased these boots after owning some other factory seconds from Wolverine. I loved them. I knew that there would be minor defects, but upon arrival of the boots, I did a quick examination for large scuffs or damage and did not see anything. It wasn't until after I had worn them outside did I realize the captoe was pretty crocked. Not just a hair off, but significant enough for me to notice every time I look at them

Granted, this was my mistake for not reviewing them close enough, but still pretty disappointing.

Other than the screwed up toe, the boots look pretty good overall.

i was apprehensive because of the reviews on the various wolverine 1000-mile factory seconds that said they were junk well below 2nd's quality. i ordered these rockfords and the courtlands. the courtlands arrived in a plain box, but had few flaws -- a few dents in the leather that would have happened after a couple wearings anyway; i was somewhat disturbed by the slightly uneven placement of the top flap of leather on the moc toe, but not much. the reason i sent them back is that they were smaller than the same size in the rockfords and i wouldn't have had room for thick socks. so i guess that's a problem: that two pairs of shoes from the same wolverine line in the same size were not actually the same size. by the way, i ordered both pairs a full size down (12 instead of 13), and that's the right thing to do; while i found the courtlands smaller than i wanted -- i have lots of great english and european shoes, but wanted a presentable pair of black boots for bad winter weather -- they did still fit properly, and comfortably, with normal socks.

so, to the rockfords: these came in the original wolverine box with a felt cloth (at these price points, shoes really should have individual felt bags) and are in virtually perfect condition. i would have a very hard time distinguishing them from 1st quality. i prefer this particularly old-fashioned, somehow very american captoe (not better than english or austrian/czech captoes, just different -- slightly clunky in a pleasing way; they aren't dress shoes, after all) and the oxford rather than derby construction. while a bit clunky, they still have something of a rugged elegance. the courtlands less so; i think, if i wanted a pair of robust boots of this type with moc toe, i would go with the redwing 9029.

all in all, then, a very satisfying purchase, much more so than i really expected. i would prefer the rockfords had a low-profile commando sole than a leather one, since i will wear them in rain and snow, but i'll get my shoemaker to add commando half-soles.

the boots are very comfortable right out of the box. i haven't worn them yet -- won't for a couple months yet, i expect -- but i hope they'll be just as comfortable then.

These seconds came with couple welt stitches undone, deep scratch near the top of the boot and a couple scrapes on the toe area. The stitches aren't too noticeable and the scratches/scrapes were polished and buffed out easily. This is a great value for a relatively slim profile boot that needs no break-in time.

I've been looking at the Wolverine 1000 mile boot collection for a few years now. I love American made boots and these are the epitome of American made ruggedness. I find that I do most of my networking through instagram and I found some awesome pictures of these online. A few people recommended Sierra Trading Post and as luck would have it I scored the last 11.5 instock.
Sizing has always been an issue for me. Depending on the make I've found that I'll fit between an 11, 11.5 and a 12. In Danner boots I'm pretty much spot on in an 11.5EE or 11.5W in their military boots. The recommendation to size down a whole size is very subjective. I was worried that trying an 11 might be a little too tight. I'm glad I stuck with a 11.5 because it fits perfectly. If you order big you can always wear thicker socks or even double them up.
The down side is they don't come with the original Wolverine 1000 mile box, I guess since they are blems they don't want to waste a perfectly good box on them. The blemishes that I could find were on the side and top of the boot just between the laces and the toe cap, just a few slight scuff marks that will come out when I apply my first coat of Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP. The other boot seemed perfectly clean. Both boots hand a small hole punched in the side of the tongue, it will never be visible unless you pull the tongue out.
I look forward to years of hard work and long Sundays wearing these man boots.
