This base layer is not like traditional fleece or cotton. It must be used in conjunction with some form of heat retention like Polartec or cotton as another layer. Have used this several times hiking and xc skiing in Colorado since purchasing. The fit is snug but not restricting and the fabric stretches with movement. I have a longer torso and the length fits well and I like the longer sleeves with the thumb hole to give extra protection for your hands under a glove. I would have given it a higher rating but it is much lighter than I expected. The piece is listed as a heavyweight and the fabric is more like a midweight, I expect Columbia used their midweight top and lined it with Omni-Heat to extend the heat rating to a heavy. If you are looking for a heavy try the expedition weight.

I used this under several mid layers and a ski jacket on a subzero day of skiing. Was warm and dry the entire day. I really like the zip neck, zip up to keep your neck warm. zip down to regulate heat. The fabric is not heavyweight, but appears to do its job as a base layer.

This base layer is not like traditional fleece or cotton. It must be used in conjunction with some form of heat retention like Polartec or cotton as another layer. And, you must be actively generating a lot of heat for this product to trap. If you are sitting in the stands of a football game, I would say your money is better spent on fleece or a wind-resistant layer.

With this base layer, a Polartec layer and a wind resistant layer, I can hike or run down to about 25 degrees. That's a lot of freedom from the bulk of traditional clothing.

This is about the most ideal base layer I've ever used for skiing. Comfortable, breathable and warm!
