Over a 25 year fly-fishing span, I've owned/fished fly rod brands from Sage, Scott, Winston, Hardy, Fly Logic, Orvis, Cortland, Fenwick, and Abu Garcia. Hands down Sage rules them all and this is the best Sage rod I've owned. Casts are crisp, lines are tight, and the ability to control line on water is amazing. Like an NFL quarterback draft combine, this rod can make all the throws.

Don't listen to the few pooh pooh reviewers. This rod will make you a better fly fisherman. The only advantage to buying an inferior "starter" rod with a softer action is you'll appreciate how superior this rod is when you buy it. You'll only regret buying the best once.

I'd been warned by a couple trusted fly fisherman that the TCX isn't a "user friendly" fly rod. I'd been out of fly fishing for over a decade but figured I could get back into the swing of things and grown into the rod. Used the 6wt for doing some beach Sea-run Cutthroat fishing. Casts pretty decent with Rio Aqualux Intermediate WF6I line. I could only get about a 50 foot cast out of it though. Being that it's so stiff (it's an ultra fast action) I went to my local fly shop to try out some 7wt line on it. Made all the difference. If you buy this rod in a 6wt (can't vouch of the other size rods but I'm considering buying a 4wt or 5wt, and probably a 7wt with a fighting butt and anodized reel seat for saltwater), I would highly suggest over lining it, or at least getting something like an Airflo 40+ or something with a heavy shooting head to really utilize the advantages of this rod.

I consider myself between a novice and intermediate caster right now (after taking over 12 years off from doing it). If I can handle this rod at where I'm at right now, I'd say your average fly fisherman would love it. I'd say a really good caster with the proper line should be able to cast 70-90 feet with this thing (one of the guys at the shop who's a top notch caster had it casting all the way into the backing and it was a pretty windy day). Tons of back bone to it, and you can pull 40' of intermediate line off the water to make another cast.

There was a guy at the shop casting a brand new Sage Method and I let him cast this rod. He liked the TCX better. The blank color is a gorgeous green/olive color. One of the best looking rods I own.

My only gripe about the rod is that you really have to over line it or play around with line types/grain weights to get it to cast up to it's potential. The only other negative side (if it can be seen that way) is now I want to own another one of them. That can get to be spendy lol.

This rod is going to our daughter who loves fly-fishing. Our son, an avid fly-fisher who fishes the streams and rivers in Montana & WY, has the same rod and says it is his favorite. The action is superb and the Sage warranty is the best. This should provide her many years of fun!
