I bought 2 of these reels for a 5wt and a 6wt setup, the drag is sensitive to minor adjustments which lets you get it right where you want. construction is solid cast aluminum (not going to lie, the pictured reel looks a little nicer than it actually does) great reel, good price.

This reel will be a great tool in my arsenal of fly fishing equipment. It is my first large arbor reel and look forward to using it catching trout and bass in my local waters. The sealed bearing should make it maintenance free for a long time. The disc brake is strong and adjustable as needed.

I have used this only once since purchase and I am very happy with the reel. It is smooth and looks good. The only down side is the size. It is a larger diameter that I am used to using. And yes, I do realize that will happen with the larger arbor designs. I put it on my 5wt and it seems to balance okay. It would also be appropriate for a six or even seven possibly.

I put together a nymph specific rod and reel package from here on STP. The sage reel was paired with the redington cpx 10' 5 wt. and it balances extremely well. I loaded the reel with 100yds of backing and a SA #6 steelhead taper, specifically to provide the best setup for roll casting. Also occasional single hand spey casting and possible overhand casting where room is available. This reel was more than adequate. This setup was put together with the intention of targeting native red sides on the Deschutes so it was necessary to have a reel with a solid drag too. The 1850 provided exactly that and I couldn't be more pleased.

This is a well built and well designed reel. The line spooled up nicely on it. Can't wait to get it on the water.
