I bought this for a pair of short light colored boots. Applied it and it went on fairly easily, although you do have to sort of squeeze the bottle to get it to come out of the tip (which is sort of a prickly foam thing). I need to use it on tall boots too, and I anticipate that to be quite a chore. A spray would be easier but will use this since I have it. (It didn't noticeably change the color of the light boots, fyi.)
It may slightly change the color of the material, but not too noticeably. It will need to be used periodically and you will need to clean the shoe off with a damp rag before applying.

I use the products once a year, typically in the spring on all my gear that will see rain/water. I live in WA however, therefore rain is more or less inevitable, so everything gets water-proofing. I do not recall it ever changing the color on any of my gear.
