Arm pads are attached with velcro as is the crotch guard so it can be removed if worn by a girl who does not want to wear that part. I did not see the age guide when I purchased this so it will have to wait til next year for my youngest grandson. However, I do think the age group is a bit old. I would say a good-sized 9 or 10 year old could wear this very functionally. Check the size of the potential wearer before ordering it for this season.

Some of the nerf "guns" have become pretty high powered with multiple rounds and shooting long distances. the 7 year old loves using his chest protector and safety glasses as his "uniform" aka power ranger/action hero. Very happy with the product and price.

Gerat comfort and she likes the adjustable shoulder pads. She Complained About it being a little heavy but I think that comes with the extra protection.
