The cup that holds the gel fits securely in the center ring and cannot be jostled out of place. I don't think the item came with instructions, so you have to figure out the few steps to put it together. I buy clean-burning gel for fireplaces and scoop it out of its can into the smaller cup with an old spoon. Even if you spill some, the item is all glass and metal so won't catch fire. The flame is beautiful and burns steady. It doesn't throw sparks like a real fire. The item seems large and heavy for the small flame, but I think that is for safety. The flame would never reach the top of the glass. I use it on our fireplace hearth or on a slate platform on the deck. It lights in 5 seconds and can be put out just as quickly. Its as easy as using an electric fireplace--but the fire is real. I love it. I think the trend now is for smaller containers you can put on a mantle or table. But you never have to worry that this one will be knocked over.

The fuel in cans do not fit this. You need to find fuel you can pour into the cup which is not very secure. This is a dangerous item.

I am not sure how to operate this item, or what it actually is and would appreciate an instruction booklet and would like to know if it is actually broken in some way. Thanks”

  • Question “Where do you buy fuel?”
Asked on 10/1/2012 12:00:00 AM by azrancher from Arizona
    • Answer Do NOT buy the ethanol-based liquid fuel you can pour into the cup! That was recalled and banned by the federal government in 2011. People have gotten serious burns when they poured more liquid into an already burning pot. The material was explosively combustable. Instead, buy the safe isopropyl-based gel that comes in cans for fake fireplaces. It's available at Home Depot and Walmart. I bought 24 cans from Sierra Trading Post on a close-out sale. It doesn't pour out of the can--use a scoop or spoon. Store it properly and don't try to add more to an already burning fire. I guess people do that with lighter fluid and thought the ethanol fuel was similar. Isopropyl fuel is flammable--but not combustable. It produces a gentle even flame--not as big as the picture in the Red Vanilla add.
