My mother was is just getting into fly fishing. This was her first outfit. She has already caught several fish on it and even a nice 5-6lb channel cat. Check out the video here. http://featherchucker.blogspot.com/2012/08/moms-catfish.html I'm not sure how the one reviewer broke their rod twice. They must not have been casting properly. I have cast this rod with zero issues. My mother is not the best caster and has no problems. Even after tangling the rod up in branches, bouncing it in the rocks and several drops the rod has held up well.

Got these for my kids. Unpacked the rod and took it out for a few casts. It does the job very well. Was making 40ft casts with ease. Great rod for the price. May pick up another just to leave at camp

This is a great beginner set for a first time fly fishermen. I bought it along with a Minnow set for a friend of mine and his son. it was for an introduction to the great sport of fly fishing. His Dad and I have fished all over North America but he never got into fly fishing. I know they will enjoy both products

Bought the Redington Minnow for my youngest son last year and he loves it! I've even used it - it casts very well, and the reel has been maintenance free, and continues to work very well. We've spent over 50 days on the water (rivers, creeks and lakes), with a couple of week long fishing trips on top of that - all without a single problem from this outfit!

I bought two of these 'cuz the price was so low that if my kids broke 'em I wouldn't be too concerned. The rod seems pretty nice for the price. The action is on the fast side, so should be easy to teach the kids how to cast with it. On the other hand, the reel seems pretty low-fi. I think it'll be an okay starter for the kids, but if they hook into anything of size, I'm fairly certain the reel will be the first failure point. Great starters for the price--and I won't mention that I now have two very cheap back-ups in the quiver just in case something happens to one of my rods... ;-)
