These are nice plates, but a lighter gray color than I expected. I was expecting dark charcoal (like a pencil lead) and these are a shade lighter than that. Also, each one seems to have a circular area in the center that is discolored. If you imagine a circle about 6" in diameter that is lighter, except for in the center of that, is about a 3" circle that is the same color as the rest of the plate, so there is sort of a lighter area that is like a big ring--almost looks like the plate sat on a stove burner, and where the heat was highest, it lightened the color. Must be something from the manufacturing process. The difference in color is slight, and not very noticeable, and certainly would not be noticed with food on the plate. I think they are still nice plates, though probably would not buy them to give as a gift, because of the discoloration.
