I have owned quite a few Columbia winter jackets that are OmniShield and even tried the Marmot Precip jacket. I live in Seattle so rain and cold are the norm for a lot of the year. I have found that the Columbia coats don't repel water in heavy rain. I hate having the fabric soaked even if it doesn't leak through. The Marmot jacket I got is just too thin and cold for anythng but spring. I thought I would try this coat out and I am AMAZED. I have gone out in a downpour, come in and give the coat a quick shake and it is almost completely dry. You couldn't tell I was even out in the rain hardly. It truly repels water better than any coat I have ever owned. It is also fairly warm with some light insulation. I dont know how it would be in very cold weather, but in Seattle it doesn't ever get Midwest cold. My only complaints are that the pockets are too low. This is a snowboarding coat and is cut to be long, but the pockets are way down on the legs almost. I like my pockets higher up. Also because of the snow skirt that has elastic, it pulls right across the waist area. The description of the coat led me to believe it was oversized for layering but in fact is a very tight fit. I always wear a medium with no problem but this coat I fit into but can barely zip it up over my waist. Once its on however I like it.
