amazingly well balanced rod By basecamp Gangtock from northeastern USA on 11/04/2009 Pros: Accurate Casting, Best tapered rod, Durable, Easy To Transport, Flexible, Good Tip Action, Sensitive Describe Yourself: Avid Fisher Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: this is my second review of this rod. I bought the 6wt first and after using it in couple of outings i bought the 5wt. they are both unbelievable rods. I have not seen anything close in this price range or anything under five hundred dollars that performs like these rods.
very smooth casting, accurate, nice taper (one of the best I have found), good for delicate presentation, creates tight loops. Strong backbone and fast action makes line management easy. I have caught several atlantic salmon (8-12 lb range) with my 6 weight rod.
I always love how the rods cast. especially during the windy condition. It punches through the wind very well and lands the fly where I want it.
overall a great buy. wish I had bought another 6 weight as a back up. Cause, I would want to use this rod for along long time. but Powell discontinued this model.
I wish I had this rod in all different weights I need - 4 wt, 5 wt, 6 wt and 8wt.
that says it all. this is my favorite rod period. and, I have a couple of sage rods and the new Orvis rod to compare with the Powell.
By Bonefish Bob from North GA Mountains on 06/30/2009 Pros: Accurate Casting, Durable, Easy To Transport, Good Tip Action, Light, Low Profile, Sensitive Best Uses: Fly Fishing, Ocean Fishing, River Fishing, Small Fish Describe Yourself: Professional Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Been fishing with Powell rods since the days before Chuck Schwab wrangled the company from the Powell family. Have always appreciated these rods and this TiMax, even though they are now made in China, is no different. I actually like the TiMax series better than the Tiboron or Edge which were both a grade up and quite a bit more expensive. I fish well over a 100 days a year with many of the top of the line rods from Sage, Scott, T&T and others. In many regards this TiMax compares with rods costing 5 to 6 times as much. At this price I had to buy 5 just for back up and to have on hand for friends that are new to the sport. I guess the best recommendation came from a friend that had just spent $800 on a rod from one of the well known high end companies. He cast one the TiMax 5wts and without hesitation immediately ordered one.
