It is not 'soft' like a fleece lined alternative nor is the outside shell 'spongy' as with your run-of-the-mill soft shell. This jacket has a micro thin layer of wool inside (instead of fleece) and the outside shell is more like a synthetic canvas. It is a tough jacket that is ready for whatever you throw at it. Although you wouldn't want to wear this for warmth (you would need a insulation layer with it) the wool does regulate temperature pretty well. There are two hand warmer pockets and an upper chest pocket. About half of the cuff circumference is 'gathered' with some elastic so that it fits your wrists, neither being open, nor tightly sealed (there is no adjusting the fit there). Also, the collar is a nice cut and comes up the neck midway, but not high enough to cover your chin or mouth. If you are looking for a tough and durable shell that will take a beating in most outdoor activities, which also has a wool component, this is a great shell.

Rather have a draw string or velcro tighteners instead of them being permanently cinched

It has a trim, athletic cut so if you don't expect to pile a bunch of layers under it you'll like it. Keeps the wind out. Repeals light rain no problem.
