can't remember exactly when i got mine, precurser to this one but basically the same. i actually use it on a bean guide series 5 wgt. and pflueger 7wgt. rod interchangeably. first heard them billed as alaska tough. although never been there this reel has served me well on the east coast. durable and holds line with say little backing comfortably for easy deployment and retrieval. simply can't go wrong with this workhorse.

I bought these for myself and a friend because I am tired of wasting money and fishing time on disc drag reels for trout fishing. I have accumulated a pile of snazzy machined disc drag reels in the $100 range that are super smooth... until actually used. They all become inconsistent when wet, some have adjustment knobs which turn when brushed by clothing, and even my beloved G.Loomis Venture had its anti-reverse roller bearing free spool this year (though it does have a reliable sealed disc). Enough! The last time that big rainbows ran like bonefish was never. If you want a reliable disc drag reel, you should plan on spending at least $150 (from STP, of course!)
This System 1 reel is a huge step up from the cheap clickers which I used a decade ago, being very light, very tight-fitted (zero play of spool on the shaft), and a firm adjustment setting. It is small in diameter, but still holds lots of backing because it is a bit wider than normal; it is said to hold 175yds of 20lb. backing with a 7wt. line. This is reel is simple and well built, and a very good bargain, and I will no longer waste any of my fishing time testing drag resistance and returning the drag knob to where I set it.

Serviceable for fresshwater fish that don't run far. Size is more 4/5/6 than 6/7/8; for a WF7F line, figure only 75 yd of 20# backing. Palming rim is sufficient for playing fish. Though click-pawl offers only light resistantce to spool overruns, at least it is not the balky disk-drag of some reels at this price.

Everything about the reel was as expected except the drag system. Plan to take it to saltwater as well as freshwater. Worried about fighting ability based on weak drag.

Price was right! Well made, with pride of ownership.
