I'm just learning to fly fish and this seemed like a decent reel to pair with a TFO rod to start with. It is aluminum vs plastic for some of the cheaper models.

The unit I received must have been an open box since the reel was out of its plastic bag and there were 2 loose parts inside. After about an hour of fiddling I figured out that it was the pawl and spring internal to the drag gear (not supposed to be user accessed parts according to the manual). Anyway, I got it back together rather than going to trouble of returning. Crossing my fingers that it will be OK now.

On the positive side, I now know the guts of this reel :)

The System 2L seems like a decent reel. My biggest compalint is that it seems to lack the quality of construction and refinement of other reels in the same price range. For instance the entry level Ross Reels would appear to be a better value. But in fairness I really need to put a few seasons on it to see how it holds up.

I bought this for my son, who is getting into fly fishing. The reel will meet the needs of catching trout up to moderate size. It seems well constructed and the extra line capacity allows for enough backing to smooth out the butt section. The spool allows palming. The reel is small and light, so the 4/5 designation seems correct.
