Reviewed by Fish Hawk from Idaho on Friday, April 19, 2013I fish for steelhead and salmon in ID and AK. I bought this reel to replace a System 2L reel I lost a few weeks ago. At half price it was a terrific deal. When I opened the box, the "hubcap" (circular plastic cover with SA Logo) was loose inside. The reel looked new in every way so I just glued the cap back on. I have three System 2 reels and have been very satisfied with them. I particularly like their silent drag mechanism.

Reviewed by Shrimpman from British Columbia on Sunday, December 30, 2012The impression is given that the 2L reels have a faster retrieve rate than the System 2 reels (ie. they have a larger arbor). That is not the case. It is a fine reel, but the arbor is small and the reels are much smaller and lighter than the System 2 series. The 2L 7/8 actually holds about half the backing of the System 2 7/8 size. The central wheel/one-way gear is plastic, as opposed to all steel in the System 2. I have no complaints, but the 2L reels are just not as sturdy, and certainly don't offer a greater retrieval rate.
