    The weather in Alaska is harsh and unpredictable. This jacket is light enough to wear as a shell and add a layer or two when the weather dictates. I am very pleased!

    The Freestone is of pretty surprisingly amazing quality, yet it lacks the Gore-Tex of its much more expensive Simms relatives. Perhaps the alternative waterproof fabric used makes this jacket less glamorous... yet function seems uncompromised. I don't mind retreating waterproof fabric (not sure how long the Freestone will remain 100% waterproof), and I do mind paying a premium price for a made-in-China jacket... with that in mind, the Simms Freestone seems a great choice for me! Has enough features to suit a hard-core angler such as myself (daily / subsistence fly fishing in Southeast Alaska), and is astonishingly lightweight. Maybe not as breathable as Gore-Tex, but out here, it's rarely warm enough to matter. At this price, you really can't go wrong!

    Typical Simms quality (excellent). Great fit with room to layer if necessary. Compact enough to stay out of the way when the skies are blue. Generously-sized pockets to hold all the money I saved. Nice addition to my fishing gear!
