Many other reviews said it, I just didn't believe it. I have too many pairs of Smartwool socks to count. I normally wear a women's medium if socks are sized only for women and a small if sized for men or women. I bought this style in a small and they are large and very loose. And the more you wear them, they more they stretch out. Not my favorite smartwool socks at all. The are comfortable and cushioned, just too big. I guess if they made this style in XS or XXS, it would properly fit my size 6.5 foot.

I've been a fan of "Smartwool" hiking socks since their first launch. However, in the last couple of years this socks have been altered in ways that make them quite uncomfortable. I always buy women's "small", but even the sizing has been changed, so that they are too big for my foot. I tried wearing them on short hikes--I now have 4 pairs of expensive, unwearable socks-- and even then they are uncomfortable. Even the material is different--feels more synthetic--and the socks have a padding that actually adds to discomfort. When I contacted the "Smartwool" company to inquire whether the original product is still available--I've been darning my old socks for a couple of years now--I was summarily told that the "design" changes every 6 months. What a shame to sacrifice quality and comfort for the sake of novelty. Perhaps these new ones work for others, but I've spent a lot of money on socks I cannot wear. My foot is size 6 and these are definitely too big; they keep bunching up and hurting my feet. I will have to find a new brand that works since I usually hike about 30 miles a week.

Holes appearing after 3rd wash. Another crazy thing, I did not wash prior to wearing and I had a terrible rash. After washing one time, still got rash, but it was less. After 3rd wash, no rash. I've been wearing other SmartWhool PHD's for several months while doing a lot of desert hiking and they have been great (I also purchased these from Sierra Trading). I liked them so much I decided to order some more. When I ordered these, I did not notice that they were seconds.

Got these in green for my son and he loves them! We got a few pairs a while back, and he kept saying how they are his favorite socks and he could live in them and never take them off (no thanks), so we got another 2 pairs, and then another 3 pairs. What he likes about them is he says they are really warm, and they are super cushion-y on the bottom, and just all around comfortable. I like cotton socks personally, otherwise I would get some for myself because they do seem quite nice. They also wash well, and don't seem to lose anything from being washed.

Asked on 10/12/2011 12:00:00 AM by Anonymous from Unknown
    • Answer The SmartWool Light Hiking Socks should keep your feet warm during early November hiking.
Answered on 10/17/2011 12:00:00 AM by Prod. Spec. Kevin from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer These socks are made of light-weight SmartWool, which tends to be for summer hiking but may be warm enough for November hiking depending on the weather in your area, your body temperature and your activity level. Some customers use them for hiking and hunting in both summer and winter. The thickest part is in the footbed,. For cold weather, SmartWool makes heavyweight socks that are warmer and thicker.

    • Answer If you wear decent shoes or boots, the answer is yes. I am assuming you are somewhere in the west-northwest and may encounter light snow. Sock has nice hefty reinforced toe area and sturdy heel. In California, they also dry pretty rapidly (overnight) after washing.
