This style has good padding, fits very well and has good support in the mid foot area. Nice heft to them. Great for long walks and walking the golf course. Smartwool always washes well and they last and last.

Verified Buyer Reviewed by Socks from Ohio on Friday, January 16, 2015I purchased these to wear with kayaking booties because my feet are constantly wet. Now, they're also warm. Love SmartWool.

Reviewed by Frugal Yankee from NH on Tuesday, January 13, 2015I bought a supply of these before a trip to Disney World for my daughter and myself, because I love Smartwool ski socks and wanted good quality socks for long days of walking. These ARE soft, but I would say these are more for everyday wear and not designed for long hours of being on your feet. They have none of the cushioning I've come to expect from the Smartwool PhD and Hiking socks. My daughter is happy with them, but I'm buying myself a supply of the PhD micro outdoor socks, because I much prefer the cushioning they provide. Also, be aware that the light (natural) color of these has a definite yellow undertone I don't think is particularly flattering (on me) and different than what I expected from seeing them on-line. I'd much prefer a white(r) shade. All in all a decent sock, but I prefer other Smartwools.

“Recommended suggested care for this product is wash/dry. Still I wonder if I shouldn't order
a size up to allow shrinkage for the merino wool?”
If you follow the cleaning instructions you should not have to worry about shrinkage and order accordingly.
The SmartWool Merino Wool Walking Socks do have a flat toe seam
