The Smith Sharpener gets better with use but starts out as the best I've used of many. The nulti-tool is the smallest I have, also of many, and provides excellent utility in any situation limited only by it's very small size. This is a very good package and a very good value. Care must be used to not lose the plier rebound spring but it's not difficult to compensate.

'Whetstones' are a hiker necessity. This diamond sharpener is compact, works great. Good price.

This was a gift for my husband. The sharpener was a nice tool. He was so excited about the multitool and it fell apart upon taking it out of the package. The spring flew out and went down the heater vent. I was a bit embarrassed.

I'm not a camper, but I'm a serious cook. My friend, the camper, prefers sandpaper. I use this sharpener once in a while, like a steel (same motion) on my high carbon-steel kitchen knives and it puts a new edge on them. It takes off less metal and is easier to control than a wheel. I don't need to use it all the time, because I take care of my knives and steel them often, so I don't know how it holds up over a long time. It would be nice if it were a little longer, but it can be made to work perfectly just as it is.

Most convenient way I've found to sharpen a knife. I have another sharpener(Lansky)which is a little better in terms of edge quality, but is way more difficult to use. Price and compactness are also nice for this item.

This sharpener has a coarse side (around 325 grit, IIRC) and fine side (around 750 grit, IIRC). These abrasive levels are both pretty coarse but acceptable for general tool and utility blade sharpening. However, I would not use even the fine grit side on a really nice filet knife, skinning knife or the like. I would prefer this unit with abrasive levels around 500 and 1200---maybe even 750 and 1500. This sharpener is solid and sturdy. However, I personally feel it is too heavy to carry backpacking. I would reserve it for car camping, horsepacking, river rafting, etc. The length of the sharpener is adequate but if you aren't carrying your sharpener in your backpack, I would want a longer unit even if it were a bit heavier.
