I have been looking for a river kayaking shoe that would be sturdy, have sticky soles, and would fit the foot like a glove. Went with a half size smaller than my regular size, as wanted snug fit and would wear barefoot, but just a little too snug for my wide feet. Opted not to size up as afraid would slip on my heel, so returned.

I returned these because the inside was not very comfortable. The construction was not smooth on the inside; the places that were sewn together scratched my feet. I think if I wore them and got my feet wet, I would get a lot of blisters.

I have been looking for a river kayaking shoe that would be sturdy, have sticky soles, and would fit the foot like a glove. All other shoes I have tried are more designed for water aerobics or walking on the beach, so I was thrilled to find this option at STP. Out of the box I thought this is it. But I simply could not get the shoe tight enough not to slip in the heal, which means it would definitely come off in any amount of mud, and would not be a good option for even short hikes from the boat. Even with the strap tightened as much as possible, the shoe slipped in the heal. I wear between an 8 and 8-1/2 , and based upon other reviews sized down to the 8. My toes are pretty much at the end of the shoe, so a 7-1/2 will not work. So, I am dissapointly sending these back and will continue my search. If you have a higher volume foot, these might just be the ticket.

About Sperry

After a slippery boat deck nearly sent him overboard, lifelong sailor and inventor Paul Sperry created the first pair of Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes in 1935. Determined to find a solution for better traction, Paul carved small grooves into the bottom of his rubber-soled shoes, called “siping.” His idea for the prototype was actually modeled after his dog’s paws, which had evolved to navigate slick, wet terrain. Today, Sperry boots and shoes combine siped rubber soles for outstanding traction with advanced technical fabrics to keep out the watery elements. Over the years, Sperry boat shoes have even become the official footwear of the U.S. Sailing Team, the Shimano Fishing Tour and the U.S. Naval Academy.
