It was easy and we didn't get sick. I figure we broke even on this trip so the next one we will be saving money. Very easy to use.

Reviewed by topshot from Maine on Thursday, March 07, 2013The steriPEN is a great tool, and when I saw it at a great price with my e-coupon, I was excited to add this to my survival ensemble. However, there is a huge caveat: it uses two 123 lithium batteries, and these are getting harder and harder to find in this size, especially the super-long-lasting variety. Therefore, regrettably, I cannot recommend this particular model, and would suggest buying one that uses more common battery types.

I use it dayhiking in the mountains of colorado. I also use it as a backup to my Katadyn hiker pro on multi-day backpacking trips. I usually use it on tap water from outside the country (Asia) that I already boiled. Used it to my trip to Thailand, China, and Hong Kong. Slow process, first off the water needs to be a cool 50ish, and the process takes 1.5 min for a 32 ounce. Overall not too bad, for the price I paid and for the self-assurance.

Answer It is stainless and the weight is 2.2LBS. You should be okay carrying it on board, but they may search your bag to double check what it is.

Answer I don,t think the previous weight estimate is accurate. The Steripen website lists the weight at 3.5 ounces with batteries. Even if this is an older model 2.2 pounds seems way off.

Question “I'm confused about the difference between this (3543C) and the other Steripen (3060D). When I ordered, the description said that this one came with batteries, and the other didn't. But this one didn't come with batteries, and now the description also says that it doesn't come with batteries. Nor do I seem to understand what 'OPTI' in the title means. The package for this doesn't say OPTI on it anywhere; I thought that the OPTI meant that it had some sort of flashlight mode, which I can't seem to find. Can anyone clue me in?”

Answer I believe OPTI means that it has the optical sensor, which is an improved model vs the old model with two metal pads. Only the Adventurer OPTI, and the Traveler Mini have this feature. It apparently makes the model work better in very clean and cold water with little minerals in it.

Answer The 3543C has to Opti Sensor feature, an optical eye to sense the water (contrary to STP's customer service info). Older models use the conductivity measured between two SS pins to insure the device is in water...harmful UV out of water to user's eyes. The Opti is an incremental improvement to avoid false high conductivity readings in nearly pure water.

Answer You can use this on any source of clear water. Potable just means drinking water, but the only requirement is that it is clear. This works just fine for river/creek water.

Answer First: potable water is water that is safe for you to drink. You must assume that all water not from a tap or bottle is *not* potable. Steri-Pens are one of the very few water treatments that meets the EPA's guidelines for purity. You can use the Steri-Pen on any type of water. However, if the water is not clear you must first filter it. Second: you need purified water for personal use; your mouth is not the only point at which water enters your body. So even if you are very hot, please don't jump into the creek. Also, make sure you purify the water that invariably gets caught on the lip or rim of your bottle. Lastly, the Steri-Pen cannot desalinate water.

Answer It recommends to make sure the SteriPEN is up to a temperature above 32F. They recommend NiMH batteries as the best choice for cold weather. If in cold weather store the batteries in a warm place for better performance.
