These shirts have a micro-perforated "cellular" fabric unique to Sunspel that warms in winter and cools in summer. It is not like a fish net. The perforations are much finer. The fabric is thinner than the typical American athletic shirt fabric, and the fabric is not woven to stretch like 2{x)ist shirts. (Other Sunspel athletic shirts (non-cellular) have a thin, flat, not particularly stretchy fabric as well.) I have had these cellular shirts for many years and they wear like iron. The fabric is comfortable on the skin year around. You do not need to give them special treatment in the wash. Wash and dry them like any cotton underwear, despite the instructions.

My husband usually wears a 46-48 XL. We got him the 48-50 in white and it fits just fine.

The holes from the cellular weave allow the shirt to ventilate and regulate body temperature. On the other hand, if worn too tight, the shirt engenders the dreaded see-through, stripper effect. Get a size larger. I have worn mine several times and after laundering, the dark color faded slightly (after comparing it with another brand new shirt) but there was no pilling. I line dried it each time. I do not recommend tumble dry.

The English know how to weave Eqyptian cotton and the "cellular" fabric is an intricate weave. They are also closer to the Europeans in their approach to underwear, with the notion it should not be seen sticking out of a man's shirt collar like a typical American crew t-shirt, so the neckline is low. A Sunspel tank top does not have the clingy, stretchiness of an American athletic shirt. The "cellular," open weave is great year round providing cooling in the summer and air pockets for warming in the winter. And they wear like iron with no special care. A great undershirt!
