Stinky Blanket and Now Stinky House

I have been thinking about buying one of these for years. We got a good deal via the Black Friday discount. Our plan was to put it on a sofa near the fireplace because I had heard about wool being fire resistant, and our fireplace seems to pop occasionally..[...]Words can't describe how strong the odor actually is. Per the directions on the tag, we made the mistake of immediately putting it in our washing machine on a heavy(long) cycle and realized right away that this might be a mistake when the upstairs of our house started to smell(right away). Too late now, was my thought, so I ran it through a second cycle with some bleach this time and more detergent and more fabric softner. Meanwhile the house is almost unbearable...We skipped the dryer and put this blanket out in our barn where it now hangs. 4 days later and our house stills smeels like "grandma's closet extract". Btw, it is an attractive, heavier wt. blanket, that does pill/shed when washed but still appears to be of better quailty than I expected. This isn't a cheap blanket, its just a very smelly one...A petting groom brush is probably needed...It was a good deal, but knowing what I know now, I would do things differently for sure... My advice: if you decide to buy one, take it to a laundrymat at 3:00am(when nobody is there) with plenty of quarters and/or buy it in the summer and hang it outside for a few months or more...I do not expect to be able to use mine for a long time and probably never for it's intended purpose - on a couch. Btw, we have ran our washer a few times now empty, as we are afraid of transmitting the odor to other clothes. Wish we could open the windows and run our whole house fan, but not when its only 15F degrees outside...
